How much resin for a 24 × 36 canvas?
A 24 × 36 in canvas (6 square feet) needs about 65.8 fluid ounces of mixed resin for a full 1/8 inch coat, including 10% extra — just over half a gallon, or 32.9 fluid ounces of each part for a 1:1 resin, mixed as 2 batches.
How to work it out
- Area: 36 in × 24 in = 864 sq in
- 864 sq in × 1/8 in = 108 cu in = 59.8 fl oz; + 10% = 65.8 fl oz (≈ 72.1 oz on a scale)
- 65.8 fl oz ÷ 48 fl oz per batch = 2 batches of about 32.9 fl oz
- Mix ratio 1 : 1 by volume, SG A 1.15 / B 0.95 (typical, not published by the maker — type your data sheet’s SGs for exact weights) → Part A 32.9 fl oz (39.5 oz) + Part B 32.9 fl oz (32.6 oz)
At 6 sq ft, a 24 × 36 is big enough that a stretched canvas will sag in the middle under the weight of the resin — roughly 4–5 lb of it. Prop the centre from underneath with a support cut to fit inside the stretcher bars, or use a cradled wood panel.

- Mix it in 2 batches of about 32.9 fl oz — pour the first, then mix the next while you spread — so no cup sits long enough to heat up and start to thicken.
- fl oz = measured in a cup; oz = weighed on a scale. Use whichever your resin label gives.

What to know about a 24 × 36 canvas
A 24 × 36 is the standard large poster size and a common size for statement paintings, and it is where the weight starts to matter. The mixed resin weighs about 72.1 oz (4.5 lb); after cup residue and drips, roughly 4 lb of it cures on the piece. Rigid foam board or thin plywood cut to fit inside the stretcher bars and shimmed so it touches the back of the canvas stops the belly forming. Check the hanging hardware too — the finished piece is noticeably heavier than the bare canvas.
The kit maths is awkward: two 32 fl oz kits hold 64 fl oz, about 2 fl oz short. Three quarts cover it with about 30 fl oz left; a 1 gallon kit leaves about 62 fl oz, enough for a second coat or another piece. Coating the 1 1/2 in sides takes the total to about 79.5 fl oz (table above), which still fits in three quarts.
With the default 48 fl oz batch limit that is two batches of about 33 fl oz. Mix the first, pour it over one half in a zigzag, and start mixing the second straight away while a helper spreads. Don’t mix the whole half gallon in one bucket to save time: as Epoxyworks explains, a large mass of mixed epoxy heats itself and thickens faster, which is the opposite of what you want on a big surface.
