How much epoxy for a 3-car garage floor?

Short answer

You need 7 kits of garage floor epoxy rated at 250 square feet for two coats on a 32 × 24 ft three-car garage (768 square feet), because two coats with a 10% margin come to 1,690 square feet.

How to work it out

  1. 32 ft × 24 ft = 768 sq ft × 2 coats + 10% = 1,690 sq ft
  2. 1,690 sq ft ÷ 250 sq ft per kit = 6.76 → 7 kits
  3. Section per kit: 250 sq ft ÷ 1.1 = 227 sq ft

Three-car garages are commonly around 30–36 ft wide and 22–26 ft deep; 32 × 24 is a typical middle. At this size a two-coat system takes a lot of boxes, so it’s worth pricing kits against buying a coating by the gallon — see the floor coating calculator.

Most DIY kits are one coat. Enter 2 if the instructions call for a base coat plus a clear top coat.

Color chips (flakes) are thrown into the wet coat. “Fully covered” means throwing until the wet coat can’t hold any more.

What to know about a 3-car garage floor

Seven kits means seven separate batches per job, and each one starts its pot life (the time the mixed coating stays usable in the bucket) the moment it’s mixed. Don’t mix the next kit until the previous one is nearly on the floor. With two people — one mixing and cutting in the edges, one rolling — a floor this size is a long but manageable day per coat.

The last kit is well used: 6.76 kits’ worth of coverage is needed, so only about 60 sq ft is left in the seventh box. Count the unopened boxes against the plan before you start the second coat, and keep them from the same batch so the color matches bay to bay.

The third bay is often a workshop or storage space with shelving along the walls. Leaving out a strip under fixed shelving can save a kit, but coat under anything you might move later — a bare stripe of concrete is obvious once the shelves come out.

By the gallon, two 10-mil coats on this floor come to roughly 11 gallons of 100%-solids coating with 15% waste; the epoxy floor coating calculator does that math for your own film thickness.
