How much resin for a 12 × 12 canvas?
A 12 × 12 in canvas needs about 11 fluid ounces of mixed resin for a full 1/8 inch coat, including 10% extra — 5.49 fluid ounces of each part for a 1:1 resin. Because it is exactly one square foot, it doubles as the reference for any other size.
How to work it out
- Area: 12 in × 12 in = 144 sq in
- 144 sq in × 1/8 in = 18 cu in = 9.97 fl oz; + 10% = 11 fl oz (≈ 12 oz on a scale)
- Mix ratio 1 : 1 by volume, SG A 1.15 / B 0.95 (typical, not published by the maker — type your data sheet’s SGs for exact weights) → Part A 5.49 fl oz (6.58 oz) + Part B 5.49 fl oz (5.44 oz)
A 12 × 12 is exactly one square foot, which makes it the handy reference size: a full 1/8 in coat over a square foot is almost exactly 10 fl oz before waste, 11 with a little extra. ArtResin’s guide quotes about 4 fl oz per square foot, which only works for a much thinner coat than the 1/8 in it says the resin levels to.

What to know about a 12 × 12 canvas
Square 12 × 12 canvases and cradled wood panels are popular for pour paintings and for sets hung in a grid, so the real question is often how many you can coat at once. A 32 fl oz kit does two at a full coat with about 10 fl oz left over. Three need about 33 fl oz — slightly more than the kit holds — so either pour a thinner coat on the third, or buy the next kit size up. Other sizes scale from here: how much resin for a 16x20 canvas is about 2.2 of these squares, how much resin for an 11x14 canvas is just over one, and how much resin for an 8x10 canvas a little over half of one.
Sides add half again on this size. The top is 144 square inches; the edges of a 1 1/2 in deep canvas add 72 more, so a coat that wraps the edges needs about 16.5 fl oz instead of 11 (see the questions below). For a clean edge without the drips, ArtResin suggests guiding the resin right to the rim and letting it dome, which suits a small square well.
The common mistake on a first 12 × 12 is the mix, not the amount. Not every art resin is 1:1: a 2:1 or 3:1 product still needs the same 11 fl oz in total, but the parts split very differently (table above). Measure each part in its own cup, then combine — and if the label gives a ratio by weight as well as by volume, weighing on a scale is more accurate at this size than reading a cup.

How much resin for a 12x12 canvas including the sides?
About 16.5 fluid ounces for a full 1/8 inch coat over the top and 1 1/2 inch sides, with 10% extra — 8.23 fl oz of each part for a 1:1 resin.
How much resin for a thin coat on a 12x12 canvas?
About 5.49 fluid ounces at 1/16 inch with 10% extra — 2.74 fl oz of each part. That is close to what per-square-foot brand guides assume.
