How much epoxy for a 50 m² floor?

Short answer

You need about 28.8 liters of epoxy floor coating for two 250 µm (0.25 mm) coats on a 50 square metre floor — 14.4 liters per coat including 15% for absorption, or 3 kits of 10 liters.

How to work it out

  1. 10 m × 5 m = 50 m²
  2. 1,000 ÷ 250 µm = 4 m²/L
  3. 50 m² ÷ 4 m²/L × 1.15 = 14.4 L per coat × 2 = 28.8 L
  4. 28.8 L ÷ 10 L per kit = 2.88 → 3 kits
  5. Area per batch = 10 L ÷ 1.15 × 4 m²/L = 34.8 m² of base coat

Fifty square metres is a large double garage, a small workshop or a 10 × 5 m unit. In metric the arithmetic is simpler than in mils: a liter spread 1 mm thick covers exactly 1 m², so at 250 µm (0.25 mm) a liter covers 4 m², and one coat on this floor is 12.5 liters before losses.

Wet film (WFT) is what you roll on; dry film (DFT) is what’s left once the coating has cured. Most floor data sheets give DFT — check which yours says.
µm
From the data sheet. Thin water-based coats are around 100 µm, 100%-solids coats often 200–500.

On the data sheet as “volume solids” or “solids by volume”. 100%-solids epoxy is 100; water-based coatings are much lower.

m²/L
Leave blank for no primer. From the primer’s data sheet — ground concrete: typically about 5–7.5 m²/L.

  • What to buy: 3 × 10 L kits of floor coating. Each kit has both parts (resin + hardener) — you don’t buy them separately. Looking at a different kit size? Change Size of the kit you’re buying above.
  • Tight fit: only 1.25 L spare. Thirsty or freshly ground concrete can use that up in the first coat — consider one more kit.

What to know about coating a 50 m² floor

Three 10-liter kits hold 30 liters against about 28.8 needed, leaving 1.25 liters — a thin margin, but enough for touch-ups at the door. Switching to 20-liter pails means two pails and more than 11 liters left over, which only makes sense if you plan a third coat or a second floor.

Many European data sheets quote consumption in kg/m² rather than a film thickness. To use this calculator, divide the kg/m² figure by the product’s density in kg/L (also on the data sheet) to get L/m², then switch Data sheet gives to coverage rate and enter 1 ÷ that number. Don’t mix up wet and dry microns on solvent-borne or water-based products: the data sheet may give both, and if it gives only the dry film, set The data sheet’s film thickness is to Dry film (DFT) and enter the volume solids — at 50% solids, 125 µm dry is 250 µm wet and takes twice the liters the dry figure suggests.

Each 10-liter kit covers about 35 m² at this film with the allowance, so the first coat takes one full kit plus about half of the second. Plan the split before mixing — a line of tape across the floor at roughly 7 m from the far wall marks where the first kit should run out.

Frequently asked questions

How many liters of epoxy for one coat on a 50 m² floor?

About 14.4 liters at 250 µm wet, including 15% for absorption — 2 kits of 10 liters.

How much epoxy for a 50 m² floor at 400 µm per coat?

About 46 liters for two coats, because coverage drops to 2.5 m²/L at 400 µm.

How many 20-liter kits for a 50 m² epoxy floor?

2 kits for two 250 µm coats, leaving about 11.3 liters over.
